Folks,

I was called away and didn’t get back in time to hold office hours. I apologize for that.

To compensate, I’m going to schedule an office hour tomorrow from 11am to 12pm, and I will also be in my office after class (best time is probably after 4:15, but I may be free before then).

I will also hold an office hour from 12:30pm to 1:30pm on Wednesday, in addition to the usual 4pm–5pm one.

Folks,

Because of the midterm this Thursday, I’m changing Homework #2’s due date to May 9 (that’s an extra week — it was originally due May 2, but no longer). The extra credit is due on the same date, SmartSite has been updated (as of 1pm).

Also, I will be at a meeting on Wednesday and Thursday, so I have to change my office hours. I will hold them on Tuesday from 9–10am and Friday from 10am–11am.

Folks,

The output in the assignment sheet for extra credit #1 has a typographical error in it.

The value in the row for month 11, and the principle column, should be 426.84. It was 426.25.

The posted assignment has been corrected.

A few people have asked, so I am just reminding people that the Friday 1:10PM discussion has been moved to Wellman 115.

Also, for your first homework, remember that it needs to be able to handle any reasonable user input; i.e. the user may be borrowing more or less than $5000 at a different interest rate and for more or fewer years. For example, if a user borrows for 2 years, you should have 24 rows…

Folks,

A couple of questions have come up about homework #1.

1. Does the program have to handle incorrect/invalid input?
   Answer: The program for this assignment need not handle incorrect/invalid input, but all future programs must handle them. The only reason you don’t have to for this assignment is that we won’t cover conditional statements until the day the homework is due, and you need those to handle incorrect/invalid input.
2. The equation for monthly payments appears to output 612.84 rather than 431.48.
   Answer: The problem here is that you’re using the annual interest for the interest per period. The period is 1 month; the lifetime of the loan is 12 months, or 1 year. So the interest per period is actually 6.5%/12, not 6.5%.

Also, I will be out of town on Monday, April 7, so will not hold office hours then. I will hold a make–up office hour on Friday, April 11, at 11:00–11:50am.
