Homework 5 Accepted through Sunday

Posted by: Matt Bishop
Date: Mar 15 at 4:13pm

Hi, folks,

A number of people have requested more time on Homework 5. So, it is still due tonight (Friday, March 15), … but I will accept without penalty any homework 5 assignments submitted before Sunday, March 17, at 11:55pm.

So, even though I am not giving a formal extension, I’m giving a very informal one.

I have updated Canvas accordingly. The due date there is unchanged, but the “accept until” date is changed.

So, please keep working on it, and if you have turned it in and want to make changes, go ahead. Canvas will stop accepting submissions on Sunday at 11:55pm.

Hope this helps,
Matt Bishop

ECS 36A Review Sessions — You Want to Read This!!

Posted by: Matt Bishop
Date: Mar 14 at 12:31am

Folks,

There will be a couple of review sessions.

Also, the online evaluations for this class are here: https://eval.ucdavis.edu This will close on March 14 (this Thursday, today). If you have not filled it out, please do so. I take these quite seriously, so I welcome suggestions for improving the class and my teaching. I’d also appreciate it if you tell me what went well for you, that will help me keep what is working. Remember, these are anonymous, so I will never see who filled out the evaluations, or be able to associate an evaluation with a person. Also, I will not see them until final grades are submitted. Thanks!

Hope this helps,
Matt Bishop

Homework 4, Problem 2

Posted by: Matt Bishop
Date: Feb 25 at 10:28am

Folks,

When you run your tests in part (d), please do 5000 of them for each number of people (that is, 5000 tests for 2 people, 5000 tests for 3 people, and so forth). Do *not* ask the user for the number of tests to run.

Also, stop the program when you go over a probability of 0.9. Remember to put the number of people needed for the probability to be greater than 0.5, and the number of people needed for the probability to be greater than 0.9, in the header comments!

Hope this helps,
Matt Bishop

Homework 3 Comments

Posted by: Matt Bishop
Date: Feb 15 at 2:01pm

Folks,

If your error in problem 2 does not exactly match mine, that is okay. The exact error (and, for that matter, the approximation) depends in large part on your choice of starting point. If you match what I got to 10 decimal places, that’s fine.

Also, for the extra credit, if you get a division by 0 error, or have gaps where the lines should meet, then look at the assignment again; I mistyped some intervals as closed (ie, including 3) when they should have been open (i.e., not including 3). I corrected these in the assignment.

Hope this helps,
Matt Bishop

Extra Credit 3 Revision

Posted by: Matt Bishop
Date: Feb 12 at 12:29pm

Folks,

If you were getting errors in Extra Credit 3, it may be because some of the intervals should be open rather than closed. I fixed the assignment, so take another look at the extra credit as posted and try those intervals. The changes are very minor but will have a significant effect.

Hope this helps,
Matt Bishop

Tutoring from the Computer Science Club

Posted by: Matt Bishop
Date: Jan 21 at 4:521pm

Folks,

The Computer Science Club is once again offering free tutoring for ECS 36A. I strongly recommend this service if you have problems; they are very helpful. Of course, the TAs and I will be happy to help, too!

Their tutors can be found in 75 Kemper. If 75 Kemper is full, then the tutors will be located in one of the other CSIF labs (information will be written on the white board in 75 Kemper).

Yongshuai Liu (yshliu@ucdavis.edu)
Office Hours: M 4:10pm–6:00pm in room 47 Kemper; W 11:50am–1:00pm in room 47 Kemper

The tutoring calendar is available here. It shows when the tutors are available and which classes they can help with (they do other classes as well as ECS 36A).

Please, if you get help for a programming assignment, add a comment in their program indicating who they were tutored by and when. This helps keep the service going (among other things).

Hope this helps,
Matt Bishop
