Two common problems with Gradescope

Posted by: Matt Bishop
Date: May 13 at 1:15pm

Hi, folks,

I received several questions about programs not compiling in Gradescope, even though they compiled fine on other systems.

Some of you sent me your programs — which I appreciate; I can’t help much without them. I saw people are making two errors:

  1. Some programs have comments on lines beginning with “//”. Later versions of C accept that, but the version we are using does not. It produces a compile-time error. So use “/*” to begin the comment and “*/” to end it.
  2. Some programs declare a variable in a for statement, like this: “for(int i = 0; i < 10; i++)”. Again, some versions of C allow this, but the one we are using does not. So declare the variable with the declarations at the top of the function.

A great way to test your program is to upload it onto the CSIF systems. Then compile it using the ansi -pedantic -Wall options. So, if your file is named “plugh.c”, issue this command: “gcc -ansi -pedantic -Wall -o plugh plugh.c”. Any warnings or errors that occur will occur when Gradescope processes your file.

Hope this helps,

Matt Bishop

Today’s (May 9) Class

Posted by: Matt Bishop
Date: May 9 at 8:28am

Hi, folks,

I was called out of town for today and tomorrow. Since I can’t teach a class today, I recorded the lecture on a set of PowerPoint slides (go to the Lecture Notes page). All programs and such are on Canvas so you can download and run them.

I will be back on Monday, so class will be as usual on May 14. With luck, I’ll be around for the rest of the term.

Hope this helps,

Matt Bishop
